Planning Your Romantic Weekend Retreat in the Lake District

March 22, 2012

The Lake District is one of the most enchanting holiday destinations in the UK, perfect for a romantic weekend getaway or a longer, relaxing escape. Whether you and your loved one are looking for thrills, spills and adventure on the water or simply want to enjoy the peaceful serenity of the stunning scenery, then the famous lakes can provide everything you want.

If you’re planning your holiday for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, then there are plenty of gift ideas for two that can be enjoyed during your visit, from adventurous boat rides, watersports lessons or a sumptuous dining experience at one of the area’s many renowned restaurants.

Largest National Park

The Lake District itself is made up of England’s largest National Park, a breathtaking 900-mile stretch of stunning scenery. Even with more than 15 million visitors a year flocking to the shores of the lakes, there is plenty of space for you to find your own little patch of wilderness just for the two of you to enjoy together.

Beautiful Mountains

Hills and mountains surround the water and create a picture-perfect backdrop to the splendour of the lakes themselves. The mountains are more than just a photo opportunity too, with outdoor activities ranging from adrenalin-fuelled climbing or challenging mountain biking through to gentle hill walks and wildlife-spotting hikes.

Scafell Pike is the highest peak in the park at a towering 3,210 feet high, with a walking route available if you and your partner are keen to reach the summit. Needless to say, the views from the top make the effort worthwhile.

Lake Windermere

Lake Windermere is perhaps the most famous of the lakes in the area, but there are 15 more to visit as well, including 12 of the largest in England all within reach of each other. Naturally the water has become a popular playground for many visitors, but the lakes are equally attractive as a route to romantic bliss.

Hiring your own rowing boat means you can paddle out into the water for peace and quiet and unspoiled views of your dramatic mountainous surrounds. If rowing sounds like too much effort, simply step aboard a picturesque steamer, with plenty of organised boat trips available to help you take to the water in relative luxury.

Or if you’re looking to inject a little more energy into your romantic break, then try visiting a watersports centre such as the Coniston Boating Centre at Lake Coniston and trying out kayaking or wind surfing.

Action packed activities

Back on dry land, mountain bikes can be hired out for exploring the landscape, while horseriding trips are also available, while thrill-seekers can get stuck into abseiling or zorbing. At the end of a busy day, you are bound to want to warm up and relax in the comfort of one of the many inns, or settle down by the fire in your own cosy cottage.

There is a range of accommodation to suit all budgets available within the area, but whatever you choose you know you have one of the most romantic natural landscapes to explore right on your doorstep.

Top 5 Companies Who Contribute to American Political Campaigns

March 2, 2012

Just about everyone knows that American businesses contribute heavily to the political campaigns that champion their causes. Who are the largest donors? Here are the top five corporate contributors, in ascending order, based on campaign gifts between 1989 and 2010 as measured by the Center for Responsive Politics.

5. Altria: $24.3 million

The former Philip Morris tobacco company, now called Altria, is the top producer in the world and has spent the bulk of this money protecting themselves from legislation and lawsuits. More recently, Altria changed its position and endorsed the Food and Drug Administration’s move to classify nicotine as a regulated drug. Annually, Altria spends over $10 million on lobbying. In the 2010 elections, their donations went mostly to Republican candidates.

4. United Parcel Service: $24.9 million

Over the years, UPS has spent a lot of money on lobbying in an effort to gain the upper hand on major rival Fed Ex. Rivals aside, UPS has opposed legislation which would allow the U.S. Postal Service to become a competitor for overnight and second-day air services. Free-trade agreements that encourage overseas shipping have been endorsed heavily by UPS. This company also supports mostly Republican candidates.

3. Citigroup: $27.5 million

This financial services company equally supports Republicans and Democrats. Contributions peaked in and around the 2008 election cycle, but fell significantly by the end of 2010.

2. Goldman Sachs: $36.7 million

One of the largest banks on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs has skyrocketed its political spending since 2004. They have certainly benefited from financial deregulation and government bailouts. Goldman Sachs heavily favors Democrat candidates.

1. AT&T: $45.6 million

Their massive campaign donations totaled $45 million between 1989 and 2010 for both Republican and Democrat candidates, but even more impressive is their lobbying budget of over $25 million in 2006 alone. After being hacked into pieces in the early-1980s antitrust breakup, this company has focused on regrouping and growing into the mammoth corporation it is today. Greasing a few palms certainly hasn’t hurt their efforts.

While impressive, this list of top donors doesn’t include numerous other corporate givers such as Microsoft, JPMorgan, Time Warner, Morgan Stanley, and Lockheed Martin. Nor have unions been considered either; their total spending rivals the amounts mentioned here. It’s interesting to note patterns of “give money, receive a direct benefit” or “we just got slammed in an antitrust trial – time to up to the donations.” Whether these attitudes help or hurt the average American is certainly up for debate, but that’s for another day.

Dog Training Information

March 2, 2012

This dog training infographic is the result of surveying over 1000 dog owners from around the world. It provides some fascinating insights into how we train our canine companions and what a difference this can make to our (and their) lives.

One of the most interesting findings was that puppy socialisation classes seem to hold the key to having a well trained dog. Of the owners that attended these classes, 40% believed that their dog was an ’8 or 9 out of 10′ when it comes to how easy they were to train. In essence, the better socialised the dog was as a puppy, the more likely it was to be easy to teach new tricks!

Also, unsurprisingly, ‘sit’ was the most well known command with over 90% of dogs being trained to do so. Stay and ‘Recall’ (getting your dog to come back) followed closely behind with just over 80%, and then ‘Lie Down’ was a little further back with just under 70% of dogs knowing what to do. 5 Simple and Creative Valentines Day Crafts

February 14, 2012

The one thing Valentine’s Day always brings to mind is pretty handmade crafts. The holiday is right around the corner, so it’s time to break out the hot glue gun and get started. Remember to keep the glue temperature appropriate to the project. High temperature hot glue lasts longer in warm, humid climates while low temperature is safer and offers some fun options like glitter glue sticks.

Candle Wreaths

Candle wreaths are best for the LED candles or pillar candles that will not be lit. Lit pillar candles pose a fire hazard when used with wreaths made of flammable materials. Small, foam core wreaths work best for candle wreaths. Hot glue almost any material from frayed fabric to paper cupcake liners to the wreath core. Keep all fluffy materials to the outside of the wreath in order to accommodate the pillar candle.

Old Fashioned Valentines

What could be better than a homemade Valentine card? Lace edging and doilies give a card an almost Victorian appearance. Metallic transfers and glittery hot glue creates a more modern card. Charms and cutout pieces from the scrapbooking aisle make excellent glued on embellishments. Felt cards with fabric trims can easily be pieced together with hot glue and embellished with embroidery thread and ribbon.

Hand Made Envelope

A special Valentine needs a special envelope. A felt envelope is sturdy enough to protect a homemade Valentine for years, while a paper or card stock envelope offers the opportunity to hand decorate the outside with personalized drawings.

Valentine Card Box

After a long Valentine’s Day, the one thing everyone needs is a handy box for holding all those pretty cards. Card boxes offer the opportunity to use recycled materials. Tissue or cereal boxes work well for the base. Hot glue pretty paper and doilies or other trims to the boxes. Glitter glue sticks are an interesting choice for embellishment. They fit into a low temperature glue gun and can be used to add drawings or names and messages to the front of the card box.

Valentine Door Wreath

Show the neighborhood how much you love everyone by hanging up a beautiful wreath. A wire hanger can be a good core for a wrapped wreath. It even has a convenient hook for hanging. Wrapped wreaths can be made from yarn, frayed fabric or even plastic bags. Wreaths using grapevine cores can be wrapped, have glued on items or pieces of material poked between the vine twists. Foam core wreaths are the perfect backing for items that can be glued around the outside such as balls of yarn, ribbon roses or plastic hearts.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to get out the hot glue gun and make some heart-warming handmade crafts.

5 Bad Mistakes that Will Fail Your Article Marketing Campaign

February 11, 2012

The best thing about article marketing is that you can spend 30 minutes to write an article, submit it to article directories, and drive traffic from your article for many months to come. You don’t have to invest big money just to do article marketing. However, most people tend to make mistakes that will make their article marketing campaign fail. Here are 5 bad mistakes that will fail your article marketing campaign:

1. You are not connecting your articles with your landing page

The first thing to make sure that your article marketing process goes smoothly is to connect your articles with your landing page. It means that your landing page must be highly relevant with your articles. Even slight deviation will result in wasted traffic. For example, you may write an article about ‘how to get your ex-boyfriend back’ and send the traffic to a landing page which talks about ‘how to get your ex-husband back’. This kind of traffic will not convert well. So, relevancy between your articles and your landing page is important in order to generate some sales from the traffic that come from your articles.

2. Your article is not persuasive

One important thing that your article should do is to persuade your readers subtly. I mean not forcefully insert your idea to your readers. In fact, you don’t need to force your readers to do anything. You just need to persuade them to think that your solution is the best solution for them. If your article cannot give enough persuasion, you will not make good connection with your readers. Some things that will make your article more persuasive are expertise, quality of your information, your understanding toward your reader’s problem, and accuracy of your information.

3. Your landing page doesn’t convert

No matter how many articles that you write each day, if you don’t have a good converting landing page, you will have difficulty in converting your traffic. So, you have to make necessary tweaks that will make your landing page more effective. First, it must be highly relevant, as mentioned above. Second, it must address your reader’s problem and introduce them the best solution to solve their problem. Third, it must have a good call to action. Fourth, it must be well-written so that your readers will at least visit the merchant’s sales page from your landing page.

4. You are not smart enough in tackling your article marketing problem

If you do any marketing campaign, especially article marketing, you have to know your weaknesses as well as your strengths. There will be problems that you will experience on the way. So, it is better for you to know what you are capable to do. If you know that your landing page doesn’t convert and you can’t fix it no matter what you do, you need to have a backup plan in place. Don’t let this problem to prevent you from attaining success with your article marketing campaign. If you have problem with your landing page, why not try to direct your article marketing traffic directly to your merchant’s sales page? Once you get some profit, you can hire a copywriter to write a landing page copy for you.

5. You are selling too soon

Your articles are not your tool to sell your product or service. It is too soon for you to talk about your product in your articles. You will use your articles to educate your readers with valuable information related to your niche. You don’t use your articles to sell your product. If you are selling too soon, it will turn off your readers instead of making them more motivated to learn more about the product that you promote.

Those are 5 bad mistakes that may cause failure in your article marketing campaign. If you are doing article marketing right now, avoid those bad mistakes if you want to succeed with your campaign.

5 Ways To Show Your Favorite Car Owner How Much You Love Them

February 9, 2012

There’s a pretty good chance that someone you know and love cherishes their car. I call these people gear heads, and if you know and love a gear head than I’ve got good news: These people are easy to shop for. There are dozens of gifts you can buy them that they’re guaranteed to appreciate. Here are some ideas that are sure to put a smile on their face.

1. Get them a gadget. If you walk into your neighborhood auto parts store with $25, you’re all but guaranteed to find some trinket or gadget that will give your favorite gear head something fun to do. From cool little LED lights to electronic gadgets to a surprisingly wide variety of tools, your money will go a long way and get your favorite gear head something they’ll enjoy playing with.

2. Get their car serviced for them. Raise your hand if you love driving down the shop, sitting in the lobby, and waiting for them to finish changing the oil and rotating the tires on your car. Has you hand left your side? No? Than you know why getting someone’s maintenance done for them this is a nice gift.

3. Detail their car (or pay for someone to do it). There’s nothing quite like jumping into your car on your way to work and realizing that your car is spotless inside and out. It will make your morning, let alone your favorite gear head’s morning, who will appreciate the fact they don’t have to do this themselves as much as they’ll enjoy the feel of a clean car.

4. A full tank of gas. When was the last time you filled up your car and thought, “gee, that was really affordable?” I know what you’re thinking – gasoline isn’t a very fun gift – but who says that you don’t include a nice little drive as part of your gift? Besides, I know a lot of people who would really appreciate not having to fork over $50 or more for fuel.

5. Buy some tires. OK – if you thought the last gift idea was bad, you probably hate this one…but hear me out. The best way to show someone how much you care for them is to buy them the single-most important piece of safety equipment on their vehicle: tires.

Tires, ladies and gentleman, have done more to prevent car accidents and save lives than airbags, anti-lock brakes, and have ever done…combined. A good set of tires can really make a life or death difference.

The big picture here is that good gifts for gear heads are often practical in nature – and that’s because gear heads are usually very practical people. Good luck.

The Good and Not So Good of Remarkable Gifts

January 27, 2012

Grand gestures in gift form can be amazing. Each of the following examples is undoubtedly remarkable, but maybe not in the manner you might think.

Cleopatra

Yes. Cleopatra was given as a gift. And by herself in fact. The whole thing was rather showy and dramatic. Upon deciding to gift herself to the Roman Emperor Caesar she had herself rolled in a carpet and unravelled before him. It was an unconventional entrance, but spectacular and resulted in Caesar falling for the 21 year-old Egyptian. It might have all been fuelled by political convenience but the relationship is one of the most famous in history and it all began with a gift.

Trojan Horse

Right the outcome of this gift is somewhat less than desirable for the recipients. Nevertheless it was a gift and it was impressive. After 10 years of laying siege unsuccessfully to the city of Troy the Greeks decided that something a little more cunning was required. Their plan was devious and gift based. It was traditional for defeated generals to surrender their horses to their conquerors and so the Greeks built a horse, a symbol of their conceding. They left the giant horse outside the city and pretended to sail away. That evening the army of Troy pulled the horse into the city celebrating their victory. However, hidden in the horse were a squad of Greek soldiers who were able to sneak out and let the rest of the Greek army into the city, they hadn’t sailed away at all, it was all a ruse. The result was the destruction of the city and a definitive end of the war.

Van Gogh’s Ear

Eww. The mad Dutch artist reached his most bonkers state in December 1888 after his relationship with fellow artist Gauguin deteriorated irreconcilably. The frustrated and mentally ill artist confronted Gauguin, threatening him with a razorblade. Panic stricken at his own actions he fled straight to a brothel he frequented. Once there he turned the razorblade on himself and severed his ear. The freshly removed appendage he wrapped in newspaper and gave to a prostitute called Rachel and asked her keep it ‘carefully’. Quite the gift, he left dazed and bleeding and was later found unconscious by Gauguin who immediately had him admitted to hospital.

Recently there has been debate about whether Van Gogh did the cutting himself. It has been suggested that the severing was done by a sword in the hand of Gauguin. However the lost lobe was still given to Michelle as a gift in both scenario’s so it still qualifies.

Fire

Fire! If you’re into your Greek mythology then you know that fire was maybe the greatest gift of all as it gave rise to human civilisation as we know it. Prometheus was a clever fellow and a champion of mankind. These traits led to him half-inching fire from beneath the nose of Zeus and giving it to us humans. The result was civilisation. Zeus was less than pleased and punished Prometheus in horrific fashion. He tethered him to a rock where he had his liver eaten out by an eagle, each day his liver would grow back and be consumed by the eagle again. Pretty grisly. Thankfully Prometheus only had to put up with this for a few years before Hercules vanquished the eagle and broke the chains that held him.

Despite the impressive nature of the gifts in this quartet it’s probably best not to follow their lead when it comes to picking something out for your auntie’s 50th.

Peter Parks is working on the logistics of unrolling himself from a carpet as a way of entering his next social function. Meanwhile though he keeps himself occupied by researching and writing about novelty gifts for Find Me A Gift.
